Creatives, how are you holding up? We’re releasing another playlist to help you get through the week! By Design Radio is back with Episode 4, curated by Jayden Fleming (@flemmdoggydogg).
Jayden Fleming is an event host and rollout specialist hailing from Wichita, KS. Operating as the Creative Director of Mars Mansion and Creator of AFTERDARK: An R&B Experience, he considers himself a curator of culture. We asked Jayden a few questions on his relationship with music. Enjoy our conversation with Episode 4’s curator below:
What draws you to music as a form of expression?
Music says everything you want to say but to a beat. It expresses every emotion high and low! It’s a feeling above all.
Do you remember the song or artist that first really spoke to you?
Michael Jackson. I listened to Michael Jackson so much as a kid I thought he was new! But Kanye West is the first artist that spoke to ME. He brought out the creative side in me and literally became the soundtrack to my life.
What are your favorite kinds of playlists to make?
Themed! If you look at my Apple Music profile, I have a couple of themed series going. Like Sampled. I take an artist and show their best samples. I have playlists where I tell stories too like “The Long Way Home” or “Road to Paradise Motel”, and Dedication series. I treat playlists like albums…the flow has to be right, the cover art, etc.
Do you add songs in the order you want them heard or do you rearrange after you’ve got everything selected?
Rearrange after I select everything. I definitely put them in the order I want them heard though. Some of my playlists you can play on shuffle...but most I’d say don’t.
Perfect, last one. When you’re working; do you play your own playlists or someone else’s?
Both. I think like a DJ, so as I’m working I’ll think a few songs ahead of what I want to hear then by the time I’m done I’ll have a new playlist. I listen to others to be put up on new shit or old shit I might have slept on. I’ll hear someone else’s; hear one song and think “this sounds like driving late night in the summer”. Next thing you know, I got fifteen of those ready for a playlist.
How would you describe Episode 4?
This playlist is one of triumph! Full of soul samples and theatrics! This playlist represents the many sides of me. The overly confident, the old soul, the romantic, the creative, and the overall fly type.
Episode 004 “Duality” is now streaming on Apple Music and Spotify.
